What is the Vinaya?
The Vinaya allows to benefit from the best conditions to practice reduce attachments. It is what gives the monk the means to follow the middle path and stay there. It forces him to remain conscious of every act, at all times, because it is only at this price it is possible to prevent any failure. It prevents him from wasting time and energy on trivial matters while focusing on what is healthy and beneficial. The Vinaya allows bhikkhus to be impeccable in every situation and offer the laity who support an example of purity, balance and wisdom. Besides, the only visible criterion defining the quality of a monk is his ability to observe the Vinaya .
The Vinaya is a set of tags that allows the monk to develop in the best way, the best sīla possible. The sīla being the basis for any action in the dhamma , the bhikkhu who neglects the vinaya is an opportunist. The danger is that it may interfere the community it represents, because his attitude neglected is likely to cause a lot of people the wrong way. It is therefore very important to correctly lead the Vinaya . As long as he has not been seriously implemented, its priceless benefits can not be understood. Just as a business may well be studied for years; it was only in the carrying one can truly know him. About business, we can say that the monk is a professional driving - among others.
The concept of bhikkhus is defined as much by the detachment as driving. Moreover, the non-respect of rules of conduct is mainly due to the attachment issues. Meanwhile, it is the fact of respecting these rules that contribute to the detachment.
The Vinaya also allows the preservation of the Buddha's teaching. Without the Vinaya , it can not be a sangha . Without the sangha , the teaching of theDhamma can not be transported because only an organic union of beings who fully realized the dhamma - Nibbana - is able to keep intact. Buddha said that if his teachings were to disappear, it would only be the fault of the monk ; by their lack of respect for the vinaya .
The ten benefits of the vinaya
- Approval of the rules of the Vinaya by members of the sangha : the points vinaya are established so to preserve any form of respect for each other.
- Harmony and serenity for members of the sangha : the vinayaforesees all methods of solving problems of discord or conflict.
- Possibility of expulsion of bhikkhus who are disrespectful behavior: the Vinaya authoritative, the sangha can spread the monk disrupting the community.
- Security for the bhikkhus who have great respect for the rules of thevinaya : people always prefer better help the beings of great virtue.
- Protection against great dangers in this life: the fact of adopting a right conduct of life - which includes many abstinence - greatly reduces the opportunities conducive to dangerous situations.
- Protection against great dangers in the next life: cultivating a great virtue contributes to develop merit so as to benefit from favorable conditions in the next life.
- Interest in the dhamma by persons who do not yet interested in it: the ones who have an exemplary life discipline naturally raise a lot of confidence, attention and interest.
- Increased interest in the dhamma by persons who already interested in it (same reason).
- Stability and durability of the Buddha's teaching: for a teaching remains intact, it is imperative that those that carry are in perfect agreement. This can be done only within a community that is organized around a common code of conduct.
- Arousal of consideration and value to his own conduct: the Vinayaserves as a benchmark for validating at all times the quality of his conduct.
The origin rules
Pure sīla happens to Vinaya
During the first years after the foundation of the sangha by Buddha, there were no rules of the Vinaya , nor any procedure Vinaya . The monk all hadsīla completely pure; for this reason, there was no need.
A virtuous person is provided with common sense, which will naturally lead to avoid the mistakes of the Vinaya , which concern only acts harmful to prevent and control desks for adopting a noble and impeccable behavior. Such a person will be able to avoid committing the most - if not all - the mistakes of the Vinaya without even knowing them.
The establishment of rules
Buddha never established any rules of office. Each rule has been established that due to a bad act by a monk and leading others to criticize or complain. In the Vinaya , for each rule, the following are presented: the story recounts in what context and how the offense is committed for the first time; critics of the act; people relate to the Buddha; Buddha summons the monk at fault and that the reprimand; Buddha makes recommendations to the monk ;Buddha which establishes the rule accordingly (as presented in thePātimokkha ); Buddha gives all details necessary for the application of the rule.
For each rule, the monk who committed the indecent act (body or speech) which is the origin is not at fault.
The Vinaya is designed so that everything is done to encourage each monkguilty to cleanse his sins and be careful not to reproduce, otherwise it risks being expelled from the place where it is located. Thus, the monk of every monastery remain pure, noble, blameless, worthy of veneration and easily enjoy all the necessary conditions for the achievement of dhamma .Naturally, for a monastery houses a sangha pure, it is imperative that themonk old - or the monk responsible - this monastery respect themselves and require their followers respect the Vinaya .
The observation of the Vinaya
The three ways to observe the Vinaya
Far from being an obedience to anything, the Vinaya is a tool to break free and he is nothing but a set of milestones that allow the beholder to best develop the sīla , the basic ingredient required for the release, which is the fulfillment of the path of dhamma . For this, it should be carefully avoid two opposite extremes: do less or do more ...
1. Vinaya less
This is to be observed that the points which we arrange, always finding excuses to not respect others. This way to observe the Vinaya is a wrong way.It supports (among others) to laziness, lack of attention, remorse, criticism, disrespect (by the other) and the disrepute to the sangha by the laity.
2. Vinaya unchanged
This is to observe the Vinaya as Buddha has established that must be observed by each monk . This way to observe the Vinaya is the right way. Its benefits are countless.
3. Vinaya more
This is to observe extra points that Buddha never established. Some bhikkhusthus believe do better than others; Gold often they do not even respect the points established by the Buddha. While this is the case, these points are often added unauthorized practices by Buddha, that many of them observe the sole purpose of stirring the veneration of the people, as the total restraint of speech, the refusal eat food cooked by a woman or abstaining from eating food after nine o'clock (am). The Vinaya as the Buddha established is sufficiently complete and perfect in itself. For bhikkhus who wish to adopt more ascetic character to practice Buddha taught the 13dhutanga this purpose, which the bhikkhus are not required. This way to observe the Vinaya is a wrong way. It is favorable (among others) the difficulty, fatigue, moral slavery and a forgetting the basics.
Things to avoid and duties to perform
In this site is all the mistakes made by the Buddha to the bhikkhus (and novices). In addition to these errors, Buddha established a wide range of things to avoid and duties to perform which exposed throughout the five large volumes containing the texts of the Vinaya , are not the fault object. Buddha simply said that in such cases a bhikkhu should not do so in this case, it is not proper for a monk and does, in such cases it is proper for a monk to do so and in such case, a monk must do so.
Respect for Vinaya
Respect for the laity
The laity are very devoted to the sangha . They generally demonstrate great respect to the monk and generously support. They deserve a sangha worthy of the name. It would be shameful to take advantage of this generosity to enjoy a comfortable existence. The monk had a duty to offer the laity a perfect community. We must not forget that they are the example to follow. It is therefore imperative that the monk train relentlessly to excel in leadership, patience, practice of detachment, etc. In striving for this, they must follow the teaching of the dhamma , the instructions and advice of elders.
A monk should constantly worrying want to follow rules correctly Vinaya . For this reason, a monk must try to know all the rules of conduct ( Pātimokkha ).Every time he knows little or does not include a rule, it should learn from amonk who knows and understands.
adaptation
It is essential not to overlook the points Vinaya pretext of 'adapt' to situations. Nothing is left to chance in the Vinaya , it is perfectly valid, regardless of time and place. He who is content to adopt the fair conduct can not encounter problems. Instead, it gets its needs with great ease. It is anyone and anything that naturally adapt to it, not the reverse. Thus reality works. Whoever makes the effort to practice right conduct can only be seen.Driving a monk should never be influenced by any culture or by bad habits that may have Bhikkhu located in his entourage. However, if likely to cause danger conditions, the bhikkhus are allowed to adjust accordingly. For example, in a country where the climate is very cold, a monk will not be at fault if he wears a cap or shoes. Buddha rejected all extreme. That is why, moreover, the vinaya is relatively flexible concerning bhikkhus sick.
The law primarily
Buddha told the bhikkhus that they must first comply with all the laws of the State in which they are, even if one of them goes to the inverse of the Vinaya(there would then no fault in this case). Similarly, a monk is obliged to follow all the regulations monastery in which he lives. If a law or rule forced to commit a negative act or adopt unhealthy behavior, it means the place is not suitable for a monk .
Common sense
This is an invaluable opportunity that Buddha had delivered the whole recipe of perfect virtue. However, each monk should use common sense in its driver training, not blindly bend the rules. When a bhikkhu has a doubt, not knowing if such an act is a mistake or not, it is that he abstains. In this case, it is certain not to be at fault.
